MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — Myrtle Beach News, the reader-funded independent news outlet covering Horry and Georgetown counties, today announced its endorsement of Ellen Weaver for re-election as South Carolina State Superintendent of Education in the November 3 general election.

Weaver, a Republican, is seeking a second term as superintendent of South Carolina’s K-12 education agency. She is challenged by Democrat Sylvia Wright and United Citizens candidate Baba Amin Ojuok.

“Ellen Weaver has improved metrics state-wide on education. She has proven to be a positive change agent, moving the ball forward in a state that remained stuck at the bottom of all national numbers for year,” said David Hucks, publisher of Myrtle Beach News.

In making the endorsement, Myrtle Beach News pointed to Weaver’s record during her first term, including:

  • Literacy gains. Under Weaver, the Department of Education has continued its embrace of phonics-focused literacy instruction, which officials credited for a recent jump in test scores.
  • Teacher pay. Weaver’s campaign reports that starting teacher pay has risen $8,500, which she said puts South Carolina on track to reach a $50,000 starting salary. ny1
  • Working with Horry County Schools (HCS) which ranks among the top-performing school districts in South Carolina, sitting at #12 for Best School Districts in the state
and consistently outperforming statewide averages across major performance metrics. [1, 2, 3]

“During her next term in office, we expect her to continue this legacy,” Hucks added.
